Rent is a Tony and Pulitzer winning musical by Jonathan Larson. The musical opened in New York City in 1996, and has become immensely successful, enjoying both critical acclaim and word-of-mouth popularity. It is also one of the longest running shows on Broadway.
Based on the opera La boheme, Rent centers on a group of impoverished artists and musicians struggling to make ends meet in New York's Alphabet City in the last days of the Bohemian East Village, under the shadow of AIDS.
